UnivPM Seminar
Dr. Capriotti shared her research “From aerospace to biomedical: Non-Destructive Evaluation and damage detection of complex structures”, in a seminar at the Dipartimento DIISM, Facoltà di Ingegneria, Università Politecnica delle Marche, in January 2024, as part of the activities of the Cluster Exploore Aerospace Marche. Thanks Prof. Santecchia for inviting me and coordinating the visit of the advanced B+ labs at UnivPM!
AIDAA 2024 Webinar
Dr. Capriotti (SDSU) and Dr. Diaz-Montiel (USD) offered a two days webinar on “Identification and non-destructive characterization of defects and damage in aerospace composite structures” as part of the AIDAA Educational Series and Academy, in January 2024. Thanks Prof. Petrolo and Prof. Filippi (PoliTo, Italy) for the opportunity to connect with AIDAA and share our expertise!
Congratulations to M. Zhang, JDP Student (SDSU-UCSD), for presenting her work on Ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) for quantitative NDE by hybrid global-local method at the 2023 SDSU JDP Symposium. We are proud to present our findings at symposiums like these and further develop our presentation abilities as researchers.
IWSHM 2023
It was great to connect with old and new colleagues and update on the most recent advances on SHM at the IWSHM 2023 in Stanford this past Sept. 2023.
Dr. Capriotti presented her work with JDP student M. Zhang, Prof. A. Spada (University of Palermo) and Prof. F. Lanza di Scalea (UCSD) on “Analyses by Global-Local method of Ultrasonic Guided Waves propagation in pristine and defective plates for accurate quantitative SHM”.
ASC 38th Technical Conference 2023
Dr. Capriotti attended the ASC 38th Technical Conference 2023 in Boston/Woburn this past Sept. 2023. It was great to share our work on “Characterization of Ply-Waviness Manufacturing Defect in Composite Aerospace Laminates by Ultrasonic Scattering Analysis”, learn about exciting research on composites characterization and manufacturing, and connect with old and new colleagues experts in the composites field.
Also, the San Diego team composed of Dr. M. Tehrani (UCSD), Dr. H. Kim (UCSD), Dr, Capriotti (SDSU), Dr. Diaz Montiel (USD) and Dr. Venkataraman (SDSU) announced the next ASC 39th Technical Conference 2024, Oct. 21-24, in San Diego. This conference will be a joint event with the US-Japan Symposium on Composite Materials and the ASTM D30 60th Anniversary Meeting !
Congratulations to Dr. Capriotti, PI for being awarded the Global Educator Award from the San Diego State University Office of Global Education. We are so proud of all the work she has done to teach others about the lasting impacts of NDE research.
Over the summer, Dr. Capriotti visited the Polytechnic University of Marche (UnivPM) in Italy. Together with Dr. Paolella, Dr. Capriotti discussed opportunities to strengthen the bridge between SDSU and UnivPM, as a member of the Cluster Exploore Aerospace Marche. We are proud to have a PI who shares her expertise with other institutions and puts SDSU on the map!
Tommy’s Master Thesis Defense
Congratulations to our team member Tommy Stone for his Master’s Thesis Defense on “Physics Informed Neural Networks for
Ultrasonic Guided Wave Propagation in Solid Media”. Tommy, a Master Student in Computational Science at San Diego State University, is now pursuing his Ph.D. at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego.
ASME QNDE 2023
Our research team had an invaluable experience participating at the 2023 ASME QNDE conference in Austin this past July. We are proud to expand our frontiers from experiences like the ASME QNDE conference and connect with experts in the field.
Both our presentations were nominated among the two “Best Papers of the Session”:
-Session: Advanced Modeling and Prognostics for Composites and NDE – Presentation: “Ultrasonic Guided Waves Scattering Spectra by Hybrid Global-Local Modeling for NDE in Composites with Varying Defect Features”, Zhang M., Escalona L., Spada A., Capriotti M.
-Session: Machine Learning and Statistical Methods in NDE – Presentation: “Ultrasonic Guided Waves Defect Signatures for Damage Characterization of Complex Impact Damages in Composite Aircraft Panels”, Varela K., Huynh K., Ellison A., Kim H.E., Kim H., Lanza di Scalea F., Capriotti M.
