Hybrid Modeling of Ultrasonic Guided Wave Scattering in Complex Structures

Development of an in-house computational tool to simulate, locally and on HPC, ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) propagation in anisotropic material and irregular geometries, with discontinuities (i.e., defects), in 2D and 3D for the virtual inspection of structures.

Collaboration with Prof. Spada (University of Palermo, Italy).
Current; not yet funded.

Ultrasonic Guided Waves Damage Library

Signal processing of ultrasonic guided waves data to extract the ultrasonic signature (i.e., transfer function) of specific defects, typical of aerospace composite structures.

Current; funded by University Grant Program 2021 at SDSU.

Ultrasonic Scattering in Composite Materials for Characterization of Manufacturing Defects

Detection, identification and monitoring of advanced manufacturing defects (i.e. “ply waviness”) in CFRP beams subjected to fatigue loading by ultrasonic scattering analysis.

Collaboration with Prof. Venkataraman (SDSU) and Prof. Diaz-Montiel (USD).
Current; not yet funded.

Material Properties Monitoring of Lunar Landing Pads

Characterization and monitoring of performance of landing pads realized with regolith simulants for lunar by NDE techniques.

Collaboration with Prof. Miletic (SDSU) and Prof. Torresani (SDSU)
Current; partially funded by NASA MARTE (SDSU and NMSU): MUREP Advancing Regolith-related Technologies and Education.

Engineering Guided Waves in Shear Wave Elastography for Enhanced Soft Tissue Diagnostics

Investigation and analysis of guided waves experimental settings to optimize soft tissue characterization by acoustic radiation force shear wave elastography (ARF-SWE).

Collaboration with Prof. May-Newmann (SDSU) and Prof. Urban (Mayo Clinic).
Current; funded by CSUPERB New Investigator Grant program 2021.

Damage Etiology and Prognosis by Infrared Thermographic Data

Processing of infrared thermography inspection data by thermal signal reconstruction algorithm and virtual heat source concept for damage characterization, etiology and prognosis.

Current; not yet funded.

Damage Detection and Characterization in Composite Aerospace Structures by Multi-Resolution NDE Inspections

Fusion of multi-resolution multi-dimensional NDE data to characterize damage (mode and severity) in composite aerospace structures.

Collaboration with Prof. Kim (UCSD) and Prof. Lanza di Scalea (UCSD).
Current; not yet funded.
