Congratulations to our research team who attended the 2023 ASME SSDM Conference in San Diego.
Nathan Machak presented our work with Prof. Diaz Montiel (USD) and Prof. Venkataraman (SDSU) on “Characterization of ply-waviness manufacturing defect in composite aerospace laminates by ultrasonic scattering analysis”.
Kalib Varela presented our work with Prof. Kim (UCSD) and Prof. Lanza di Scalea (UCSD) on “Ultrasonic Guided Waves Sensitivity to Impact Damage Modes in Composite Stiffened Aerospace Panels”.
Dr. Capriotti and JDP student Mingyue Zhang presented our work with Prof. Spada (University of Palermo, Italy) on “Ultrasonic Guided Waves Scattering Spectra by Hybrid Global-Local Method for Quantitative NDE”.

US-Japan Symposium 2023
Dr. Capriotti was awarded an NSF travel grant to attend the US-Japan Symposium on Composite Materials this June 2023. It was a unique experience to learn about composite research in Japan institutions and laboratories, share the vision of our NDERC with experts, visit JAXA Structures and Materials division, and have an awesome time with colleagues, especially junior and women faculty, in composite research.
June 2023
ASC 2022 37th Technical Conference
Dr. Capriotti presented the work “Ultrasonic Guided Waves Defect Signatures for Damage Identification in Composite Aerospace Structures” by M. Capriotti, K.Varela, A. Ellison, E.H. Kim, F. Lanza di Scalea, H. Kim
Mingyue passed her DQE!
Congratulations Mingyue on such a big step towards your JDP !
Mark defended his Master Thesis
Mark Smeets defended his MS Thesis on “Impact Damage Characterization in Composite Aerospace Structures using Thermal Signal Reconstruction”. Congratulations!
